Everyone has an opinion on 3D technology, most saying that they think it is pointless, just a useless spectacle (and yet secretly enjoying it perhaps). A Short History Lesson on 3D Tech
The invention of 3D technology happened a lot earlier than you probably think. Most people who know anything about it usually think that it first made an appearance in the cinemas in 1950. It’s no coincidence that this was about the time that television was becoming popular either, because the film executives decided they needed a gimmick to make sure people kept coming to the cinema. Actually though, the technology has been around since the 1920s.
What’s difference this time around though is that in many ways the television is driving the innovations. It’s not just a one time experience at the cinema anymore, if you have a 3D TV you can watch the film again the way that you first saw it. There’s also a big change in the technology, as now you can get an absolutely clear picture and the hue is not distorted by the coloured lenses.
So while history does tend to suggest that this is only going to be a passing fad again, it might be different this time because it will be possible to view the 3D films that come out at the cinema in the same way on your television. This could mean that this time it is here to stay. That’s only going to happen though if lots of people buy into the technology, and that will only happen if more content is made.
Is There Enough 3D Content?
In terms of movies, you can hardly say that the pace of new 3D films coming out is slowing down. There is always at least one, and often two or three films made in 3D being shown at the cinema now. Of course it is probably never going to be the case that all films are made in 3D, it wouldn’t be appropriate for all of them. The ones that make use of some kind of spectacle though will almost always benefit from using the technology.
In addition to the films though, we also have many sporting events which are being shown in three dimensions. There are the football matches of course, but also boxing, golf and tennis. With any sport the effect is a very useful one because it makes it far clearer exactly what is going on in the field of play. There is also other content being made especially for televisions, nature documentaries being a common example.
Is it Too Expensive?
It’s true that when 3D TVs first came out they were very expensive and not many people were able to afford them. Since that time though they have been steadily coming down in price. To the point that now there are actually budget 3D televisions which cost the same as a relatively inexpensive widescreen television.
What usually adds to the cost though is the price of the glasses, as most 3D TVs use the active shutter technology. However the budget ones have the same way of showing 3D as is used at the cinema or in pubs, utilizing polarising 3d glasses. These are far cheaper and so it is actually becoming much more affordable as well.
